The Problem

Safety was identified by CHA respondents as a top issue that needs to be addressed in Mahoning County. We are working to deepen our understanding of safety concerns that residents have by reaching out to people at community events. Findings from the Community Feedback Survey

  • Black respondents were consistently more concerned about safety than white respondents, especially related to violence, crime, and dogs.

  • In their communities, respondents were most concerned about violence, streets not being lit, and non-functional roads and sidewalks.

  • In their homes, respondents were concerned about environmental conditions and racist environments. In their neighborhoods, respondents were most concerned about racist environments, crime or gangs, and violence.
